The honest range for a properly built asphalt driveway in Florida is fifteen to twenty-five years, and the spread between those two numbers is almost entirely within your control.
What decides where you land
1. The base
More than anything else. A driveway on a properly excavated, correctly specified, genuinely compacted base can reach the top of that range. One on a skimmed and under-compacted base will not reach the bottom of it, regardless of how good the asphalt was.
2. Drainage
Second only to the base, and connected to it. Water that stands on the surface finds its way into the base, and a saturated base fails. A drive that sheds water properly lasts materially longer than an identical one that ponds.
3. Maintenance
Sealcoating on condition, crack sealing before the wet season, and dealing with oil spills promptly. None of it is expensive and collectively it is worth years.
4. Use
A drive carrying two cars is in a different situation from one carrying an RV, a boat trailer and a work truck. Heavier and more concentrated loads shorten the life, and it is worth being realistic about that at construction rather than disappointed about it later.
The base decides the ceiling. Maintenance decides how close to it you get.
What the end of life looks like
Widespread alligator cracking, ponding that returns after repair, surface that flexes under a vehicle, and patches that fail faster than the original surface. At that point resurfacing over it is money badly spent, and the honest answer is reconstruction.
The one thing worth doing today
Walk your drive after the next heavy rain and photograph anywhere water stands. Then look at the colour and run a hand over the surface. Those two checks tell you most of what a professional assessment would, and they cost nothing.
