If water sits on your driveway for more than about half an hour after rain stops, you have a problem that will cost you money — not now, but reliably. In this climate, ponding is the single most common precursor to structural failure.
Why standing water is so destructive
Asphalt is not waterproof. It is water-resistant, and a sealed surface in good condition sheds water well. Water that sits, though, has time to find every hairline opening and work its way down into the base.
Once the base is saturated it loses bearing capacity. Traffic then flexes the pavement more than it should, which opens more cracks, which admits more water. It is a loop and it accelerates.
A birdbath is not a puddle. It is a hole being drilled into your base, one rainstorm at a time.
Where birdbaths come from
- Inadequate slope at construction. Asphalt needs 1–2% fall to shed water. Laid flatter than that, it ponds from day one.
- Settlement. A soft spot in the base compresses under traffic and forms a depression. This is the most common cause on older drives.
- Poor compaction during a repair. A patch that was not compacted to the level of the surrounding surface settles and becomes a low point.
- Tree root movement lifting one area and creating a low area beside it.
- Changes around the property — new landscaping, a raised bed, a re-graded lawn — redirecting water onto the pavement.
What a real fix involves
Filling the low spot with more asphalt is the obvious move and it is usually the wrong one, because it does not address why the depression formed. If the base under it is soft, the new material settles too.
A proper repair means removing the failed area down to the base, identifying and fixing what is underneath — usually recompacting or replacing base material — and then repaving to the correct grade. On larger areas it may mean milling and resurfacing a section to re-establish the slope.
